December 2020 Fishing Report Stuart, FL

What’s up fish fans. A lot  going on in the Jensen beach area this time of year. Yes the fish are biting and we’ve got Thursday night seminars rolling at the shop as well as the Snook Nook annual tent sale December 19th. You can find all of those updates via our social media outlets.  Getting to the brass tax, after this passing cold front, we’re forecasted to have some of this heavy NW wind die out by Thursday afternoon into Friday becoming light and variable out of the W until Friday night. Going into the weekend, expect wind speeds around 5-10kts primarily SE. No current projection of rain until next week. Basically shaping up to be a stellar weekend to get out on the water. That being said a variety of species of fish have been caught recently as we transition from our fall to winter fishery.

On the inshore side, the Parker Big Bay 2300T has proven to be a versatile weapon.  Getting anglers of all ages on an aggressive fall/winter bite, catching species such as Snook, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Mangrove Snapper, Cubera Snapper, Pompano and much more. Utilizing live bait techniques such as shrimp on a jig head, or circle hook and a split shot, also free lining mullet or pilchards. Find the structure and find the fish. Deeper water columns may be holding a little better this time of year. Can’t forget to get out a night here or there to work a few dock lights. Still a lot of slot and over slot snook in the area. Snook season closing next week so get back to those good release practices.

For my offshore guys. The weather windows have been key. Get out when you can and ensure safe operating practices. A lot of fish are chewing out there right now. Sailfish and Mahi have been seen in large numbers being found trolling as well as drifting or bump trolling live baits  just outside the St. Lucie inlet in 60-120ft of water around the 6-8 mile range. Baits being put on the bottom have been finding amberjacks, a few Cobia, Grouper, Snapper, Porgy and Triggers. Get them to the boat quick or “the man in the gray suit” might get a taste before it gets to your cooler.

Hope everyone can enjoy and get some fishing in throughout the holiday season.

Get out there and catch em’ up.

Capt. Derrick Herborn
